Hipercard can be used as payment in more than 10 million locations across Argentina and Brazil. It’s owned by Itaú Unibanco Group and began in 1969 as a way to make payments at Bompreço supermarkets in Recife. Since then, it’s grown into one of the premier card payments in Brazil, and is accepted at most places that accept Visa.
Hipercard is simple. Customers sign up for an account with the company, and can use the card at participating businesses. You can add funds to your account by charging your card or transferring money from your bank account. You can also use cash or check deposits at participating banks to add funds to your Hipercard account.
Hipercard also has an app that can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. Once the app is downloaded and the user creates an account, they can access their information from any device with internet access.
The app also lets them tap to pay at merchants with the right point of sale terminals.
Hipercard is safe for users because it’s a tokenized form of payment. This means that, instead of sending merchants the user’s account information, they receive a randomized number that is stored on a blockchain, and associated with the sale. This one-time-use code is used to process the payment.
