What is the difference between payout and settlement?

Settlement is the process where funds move from the customer's bank, through the card network, and into your merchant account, it's the back end accounting that confirms a transaction is final. A payout is the transfer of those settled funds from your merchant account into your business bank account. In short: settlement is when the money is yours, payout is when you can spend it.
